Who is George Peabody?
The City of Peabody was named after George Peabody, America’s first great philanthropist, in 1896. Previous to that time it was known as the town of South Danvers, and originally as the village of Brooksby when it was settled as part of Salem in 1626.
George Peabody, who became Peabody’s most famous son, was born on Frebruary 18, 1975 in a house still standing on Washington Street near the Eastman Gelatine Corporation. The Peabody home is now owned by the city. A table commemorating the birth was placed there by the Peabody Historical Society in 1902.
